Dr Fong has reported that the Ministry of Health and Medical Services continues to record lower than expected hospitalizations due to COVID-19 despite the current resurgence in COVID-19 cases throughout Fiji.

Fiji’s mild Omicron experience mirrors that of many other countries. Fiji’s high rate of vaccination and young population mean that Omicron is not a serious killer.

Dr Fong has advised that the Ministry’s response will depend on vaccination, including boosters and proven, good common-sense measures to limit the spread, like masking and physical distancing.

The Fijian Government also announced stepped up fines for mask and distancing violations.
